Type of Franchise Ownership

This is one of the most important questions to be asked when reviewing franchises.  Do you want to be an active or passive franchise owner?  Active is defined as being an individual that is intimately involved with every aspect of the business on a daily basis.  The franchise would be your primary job and source of income.  Passive is defined as be involved at a macro or "CEO" type level.  Initially, you would 
typically be very involved with training and setting up the franchise, but ultimately would hire personnel to manage the day to day operations.  In a passive role you would be able to maintain your current job or responsibilities, and commit a fraction of your time to developing and growing your business.

Some things to consider when deciding your ownership involvement in a franchise:

  • Not all franchises allow passive involvement, review the franchise information to determine what type of ownership is allowed.
  • It typically takes 12-18 months for a new franchise to break-even.  If you plan to be actively involved and quit your job, make sure you have enough money set aside to cover your cost of living until your business turns a profit.
  • If looking for passive ownership, make sure you include the cost of that personnel when calculating the franchise's earning potential.
  • Are you an effective manager?  Have you ever managed others before?  What controls are in place for the business when you are away?  What reporting will be in place for you to track business performance?  Make sure you consider these questions for passive involvement.
